The step has the purpose of transferring old analogical video recordings onto a digital medium having a longer life or else may be copied (cloned) without penalizing their quality. In the workshop provision is made for equipments to be used specifically for analogical videos (TBC etc.) and computer compatible software operating in the same working environment, that is involving audio/video editing and vice-versa.

It is to be considered that at the present state of the art, the functions of the one are indispensable for the other and vice versa. However the rapid advance of computer programs envisages an ever increasing expertise as compared to the relevant hardware so that the software may even come to replace the hardware entirely, resulting in great cost-saving in purchasing equipments. The configuration follows:

  • Time-base corrector (TBC and noise reducer) able to work with irregular synchronisation by stabilizing them geometrically and chromatically, reducing the background noise, darkening by filling them out using lines from the previous field before the drop-outs and sparkling – a typical fault of the tapes of the sixties and seventies.
  • Adequate computer work stations supplied with electronic circuit boards for composite systems, Y/C, components and DV, RAM memories and hard disks with sufficient storage using pertinent programs and plug-ins will complete those restoring activities that the TBC and noise reducer have already performed.

Apart from restoring the single frames and the various automation levels, drop-out suppression, editing, incrementing focus and defining the unsharpened edges again using contrast layers, work stations will also have to assemble, insert time-codes, titles, news strips and subtitles, introducing special effects, etc.

The storage capacity of the hard disk memory is well known although as large as it may be; it has a limit and must therefore be downloaded from time to time.
